Children can worship and know God too!

As we come to one of the biggest Christian celebrations of the year, Easter, we must also never forget the teachings of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
In Matthew 21 we see what is known by many as the triumphal entry. When Jesus and His disciples approach Jerusalem for the Passover celebration the streets are lined with people who are worshipping and praising Him. The people are excited to see their saviour. However, Jesus, as we are told in God’s word, is weeping. His weeping for the people because they do not understand the reason for Him being there. He is weeping because the people are unaware of their desperate situation. Jesus knows that they are lost and without a shepherd and this brings tears to His eyes. But something striking is found later on in the passage. After Jesus has cleansed the temple, throwing out those whom He accusers of turning a Holy place into a robbers den we see what He goes on to do in the temple. Matthew 21:14-17 says,

“And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became indignant 16 and said to Him, "Do You hear what these children are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes; have you never read, 'OUT OF THE MOUTH OF INFANTS AND NURSING BABIES YOU HAVE PREPARED PRAISE FOR YOURSELF'?"  17 And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.”

1. Children can identify God
The chief priests were angry because the children were shouting praises to Jesus. Jesus was opening the eyes of the blind and healing the lame, He was performing wonderful miracles that even the children were able to see that He is the Son of David. Sometimes as adults we forget that children are aware of what is happening around them. If you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, He is doing mighty things in your life. Can children in your life and around you see that Jesus is the Son of David?

2. Children can praise God
Children, like adults can praise and worship God. The scribes and chief priests were fuming, thinking that Jesus was taking advantage of the children. Today as adults we can also manipulate children into doing certain things, but that was not what Jesus was doing. The children saw His might and power and they praised Him for who He is. May we never turn children away from worshiping and glorifying God this Easter.

May we ask God that during this sacred time when we celebrate what Christ has done for us, that we may allow children to see Christ in the way we live, and may we allow children to worship Christ in Spirit and truth for what He has done for them.
